I can’t count how many times I have been called into coach a leader who has recently been promoted yet was struggling in the new role because they weren’t developed and prepared to take on the position successfully.

My friends at GetLight House looked at promotions through a different lens. What if you are unable to promote someone who is ready for a promotion? What can you do to help retain the high potential without a promotion?

In a recent post, Employee Development: How to grow your employees when you can’t promote them, 3 techniques are detailed to continue to develop employees: Consider Lateral Moves, Focus on Skills Growth, and Tap into their Passion with Special Projects.

And for those high potentials who are waiting for their first leadership role, I would add one more technique to the list Coach a peer.
