We all have bias, conscious and unconscious. The unconscious biases we have are the ones that can really get us into trouble when we are hiring and building our team. A recent article in Forbes by Dr Pragya Agarwal outlines methods to minimize your unconscious bias during the hiring process, such as paying attention to the language you use in a job posting.

What I found interesting is that she didn’t suggest using a validated hiring assessment such as Business DNA. Incorporating validated instruments have been shown to help decrease bias in the hiring process. The key is that they must be validated. Some of the common assessments like Myers-Briggs and DiSC are not validated for hiring so be careful when you decide to incorporate an assessment into your hiring process.
